Oil sands are a type of unconventional petroleum deposit. They consist of a mixture of roughly 90 percent sand, water and clay and around 10 percent bitumen — a heavy, viscous form of petroleum. The dark, sticky sands look similar to topsoil, are viscous when warm and freeze as solid as concrete in cold temperatures.
